Second part of research is related on estimation of questioned, elderly about kind of assistance they expect from youth activists in Zvornik, namely implementers of this project services:

  • Occasional visit and companionship........................................................81 questioned
  • Assistance in small house works.............................................................37
  • Purchasing of medicines and other goods/food.......................................51
  • Interventions at centers for social work or health institutions................33
  • Writing letters.......................................................................................... 3
  • Any kind of assistance ............................................................................23
  • Interventions at local NGOs.....................................................................14

General observations:

  • Out of total number of questioned, 56 are settled in rural parts of Zvornik and live in very bad and inadequate homes.
  • Those questioned in town are neglected by local government and donor organizations regarding reconstruction support programs, so they also live in very inadequate houses and flats.
  • All questioned are overwhelmed with feeling of abundance and negligence, without will for living and without any perspective; the symptoms of depression are evident at the most of questioned.
  • Expectations related to possibilities for assistance from youth humanitarians are mainly about meaningful gathering and companionship, occasional walks, visits to health ambulances, purchase of medicines and cleaning of space where they live.
  • Little ashamed, some of them were hiding their illiteracy that in important scale affected communication with their closest relatives in Republica Srpska, BH and abroad.
  • The need for gathering at the level of local units (mjesna zajednica) is noticed at this category of population that would have focus to work on identity by application of reminiscences’ techniques.
  • Youth that were completing research were surprised by cooperation of elderly as well as their readiness to be active and do something for themselves. They said that they did not do anything similar before because there were no such initiative at local community level.
